Can excessive masturbation affect your prostate?

I know that there is nothing wrong with masturbating occasionally (a few times a week), but I have heard that excessive masturbation (1-2 times every day) can negatively affect your prostate (and possibly other things). Is this true? Professional or knowledgeable opinions please!

  1. Paul B. Says:

Once or twice a day is hardly “excessive”, but the only effect on your prostate will be to give it a good “work-out”.

What happens to all your other muscles when you work out? They get stronger, don’t they?

  2. JimR Says:

Masturbating a lot can’t hurt you, regardless of all the scare stories promoted by the sex-negative crowd. Ejaculating often will exercise your prostate. Masturbation is only “excessive” if it interferes with your life. If you are masturbating more often than your body is capable of, it won’t cooperate. Many young men masturbate several times a day, and suffer no health problems because of it.

  3. Just Some Person Says:

Masturbation reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

  4. Latitia Says:

If you already have prostate issues you could aggravate the issue by excessive masturbation. Excessive sexual activity, over-masturbation and prolonged sexual fantasy lead to overproduction of androgen hormones, causing adrenal and sex organ fatigue. All of this over-activity and stress could cause a long-term sexual exhaustion and inflammation.

In general, masturbating is healthy, but if your prostate starts to hurt, you are doing it too much. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week, or about once a day. Prostate pain often manifests itself as pain feeling like it is coming from the testes.

The treatment for prostate pain (prostatodynia) is to ejaculate no more than 3 times a week, cut out caffeine, soak the area in hot water daily, and perhaps self-medicate with anti-flammatories.

In the long term, frequent masturbation is good for the prostate gland. A team of doctors led by Dr. Graham Giles found that males who masturbated most often when they were young had the least incidence of prostate cancer later. Dr. Giles recommends that younger males masturbate at least six times a week.
